[Mahavairocana] Mahavairocana is unusual for a Buddha in that it has hanging hair, a jeweled crown, and gorgeous accessories such as a necklace, armbands, and bracelets, giving it a royal presence. There are two types of Mahavairocana: Kongokai and Taizokai. The Taizokai mudra is the Hokai Jo-in mudra (representing the highest state of enlightenment), in which the back of the right hand is placed over the palm of the left hand, and the thumbs of both hands are touching and placed on the lap. The Kongokai mudra is the Wisdom Fist mudra, in which the index finger is held upright in the left fist, which is then held in the right hand and index finger is raised, representing wisdom and the highest thinking. The Thirteen Buddhist Ceremonies, which are held from the seventh day after the death to the 33rd anniversary of the death, are each dedicated to a Buddha. Mahavairocana is the one dedicated to the Thirteenth Anniversary. Perhaps because he is the universe itself and reigns as the king of all things, he takes the form of a bodhisattva despite being a Buddha. It is said that this Buddha will remove all disasters and hardships and grant good fortune and longevity so that the path to the future will be bright.
