It was a Hirayama Castle built at the end of the Azuchi-Momoyama period, but in 1600 (Keicho 5) during the reign of Kato Kiyomasa, the castle tower was completed and it became Kumamoto Castle as it is today.
It is said to be one of Japan's three most famous castles, along with Himeji Castle and Nagoya Castle.
The stone walls built by Kiyomasa, who was an expert at building stone walls, are called ``mushagaeshi'' and have a gentle slope at first, becoming nearly vertical as you move toward the top.
It was also very useful in repelling the Satsuma army during the Seinan War.
