◇ (Principal image of the Soto, Rinzai and Tendai sects) This is a metal Buddha cast in Japan. It is a size that can be enjoyed in daily life as a principal image for the Buddhist altar, a talisman to ward off evil spirits, or as a tasteful piece of interior decor.
■Shaka Nyorai (Shakanyorai) The principal image of the Soto, Rinzai and Tendai sects A real person born as a prince in Kapilavastu in ancient India, his real name was Gautama Siddhartha, the founder of Buddhism. In pursuit of "a way for everyone to be happy," he became a monk at the age of 29. After undergoing various training, he attained the highest level of enlightenment, known as Buddha, at the age of 35, and this is what he looked like when he did so. He is also known as "Shakyamuni" because he is the most honored person in the Shakya clan, and is loved by people as the one who will save all living things forever. The only person on Earth to have attained enlightenment, Shaka, is said to have "no Buddha before Shaka, and no Buddha after Shaka," and is a great benefactor of our humanity who saves people by preaching the "truth." Shaka Nyorai is worshiped in various forms, but he is often seen alongside Manjusri and Samantabhadra as part of the Shaka Triad.
